The change to It's That Sober Guy and why I needed to make it.

Nothing stays the same forever, my drinking did not, my sobriety certainly is not, and likewise, the It’s That Sober Guy community is also changing. There is nothing too major, but I wanted to explain a few of the changes I will be making, and more importantly why I’m doing it.

Free for all

The first change is I’ve scrapped the paid membership to access any of the content of the site. The site will now be free to all, whenever or wherever people want to access or need it.

When I first came up with the It’s That Sober Guy community, I had never tried anything like this before. I was passionate about sobriety and the joy it can bring. I also think the biggest power we have to enable change, is by helping each other.

While It’s That Sober Guy is not an emergency service, I hate the idea of someone trying to access the site at the optimal time to change and getting frustrated by being stuck behind a paywall. Times are hard on a lot of people now, and I did not want the cost to be a barrier to anyone.

Pay it forward!

Setting up a website or community is expensive, much more expensive than I first thought.

There is domain registration, web hosting fees, marketing, email costs, software cost, etc, etc, etc. While I’m currently meeting these costs, I’m not sure I will always be able to do this, partly because they are likely to increase as the size of the community does.

For that reason, I’ve set the site up as pay it forward. People can now make a one-off donation or donate whenever they like. If you have found the site useful or even if you would like to help others in the future, then please donate using the link below. Please be aware It’s That Sober Guy is not a registered charity. If, however, you cannot afford to donate or just don’t want to, you are still most welcome as part of the community.

Stresses

I love talking about sobriety, mental health, and well-being. However, there is nothing like making something more stressful than self-imposed deadlines. Running It’s That Sober Guy is not my job, I work a full-time job alongside the work that I do for the It’s That Sober Guy community. Everything you see is me with a little help from my wife.

Up to now, I’d felt that I need to stick to a firm schedule which was taking the fun away from things, and I’ve been getting more and more stressed out. This is not the way I want to be as I’m passionate about both my sobriety and helping others with theirs.

So, what’s next?

To start with just small changes, you might notice that my posts don’t come out quite so regularly or on a fixed schedule, sometimes this will mean that I’m posting more and sometimes a little less. I’m also hoping that now the whole community is free, we will continue to grow and soon I will be listening to your stories.

If you would like to join the It’s That Sober Guy community, you can do so by clicking the link below. I hope to see some of you there, best of luck with your sobriety or any other journey that you are on. Together we can achieve anything!
