January is a tough month for most, but especially for those of us who are trying to stay sober. So, here are my 5 tips for keeping busy this January, and hopefully they’ll also help you to stay on track with your sobriety.
Stay Active – It does not matter what exercise you do, just do some. This could be anything from light walking to training for a race. Build more movement into your daily life, take the stairs rather than the lift, or park further away in the car park. It does not matter what, just move more. Exercise releases endorphins, which will help you stay positive.
Eat Well – There is nothing wrong with a treat from time to time, but one of the biggest mistakes I made when I first gave up drinking was replacing the alcohol with sugar. This gave me the same rush followed by the low. My motto when it comes to food is a little of everything but not too much of anything.
Connect To Others – This can be done face-to-face or online. Find like-minded people and keep them close to you. Consider joining online sober groups to keep you focussed. Tell friends and family that you trust, and what you are trying to achieve and hopefully they can offer support.
Keep a Journal – Write down how you feel; there will be good and bad days, and that is ok and perfectly normal. Think about any triggers that you may have encountered and if there is anything you can put in place to reduce the likelihood of you coming up against the same thing.
Be kind to yourself – We all do things that we do not plan, we all have good days and bad. Hold on to the things you are proud of and let go of those that you are not.
Hopefully, with these quick tips, your January might be slightly easier, regardless, January will not last forever, the nights are already getting lighter, and before long spring will be upon us. I wish you all the best in your sobriety and I hope 2023 brings you lots of happiness.
Stay strong
